Minor League Baseball Coming to Phoenixville?

Was reading through Councilman Senley's blog post about this month's borough council meeting, and saw this nugget in the 'Council Participation' section:

---
"...direction to the CDC on inquiring on the possibilities of a minor league baseball team in Phoenixville"
---

This is the first I am hearing of such a proposal and I am curious if anyone out there has any more information. I have read that West Chester is seriously considering building a minor league baseball stadium, is this just a matter of Phoenixville trying to keep up with the Joneses?

Personally, I think its a pretty interesting idea. As a father of a young boy, it would be fun to have something so close to be able to take him to. But with the current state of borough finances, is it at all viable?

Editors Note: Turns out if I had read the entire West Chester article I would have seen a line from West Chester mayor Dick Yoder in which he says the following:
---
"I see this as the Chester County stadium project," he said. "We could be looking at sites in West Chester, Phoenixville, Downingtown, who knows? We'll explore all site possibilities."
---

Apparently this is what prompted the topic to be discussed at this week's meeting.

I remember years ago Jack Jeffers writing an article about Karen Johns working with a semi-pro baseball league and building a field to host a team. I think it was on that Black Rock parcel off 113. Could this really be coming to town?

That could be a good location with several major roads connecting there. Plus that area is developing nicely with the Philadelphia Outlets up the road a bit and the new town center across from the big pharma companies. But I agree with Mike..... i can't see it coming through.

It's great that Councilman Handwerk found the article, reported it, and wants it looked into. If a baseball team were to happen, it would be huge for Phoenixville.

DO not let any council member near a project like this they'll only screw it up.

Several Local Businesses Closing Up Shop

Over the next couple of months, three local businesses will be closing their doors. On Saturday, February 16th, Polka Dots will be closing their store at 246 Bridge Street. The shop, a women's clothing boutique, opened nearly two and a half years ago but has recently found business slow. --- Originally, (owner Susan) Randels said that the store was doing well, but that the momentum could not keep up. "The things that sold in Paoli didn't sell in Phoenixville," she said, adding that some customers thought that the store was too expensive or the sizing did not go high enough (size 12 being the highest size sold). "We tried everything." Randels also said that parking was an issue for many of her customers who could either not find spaces or did not feel safe parking behind the store. --- Polka Dots remains open until the 16th, with hours on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. The phone number is 610-935-5914. Local Business Spotlight: The Fenix

As mentioned a couple of months back , Phoenixville will soon be home to a premium martini and whiskey bar. Named The Fenix, it is owned by the owners of Molly Maguire's and will be located right next door to Molly's at 193 Bridge Stret. The Fenix hopes to have a soft opening tonight or tomorrow with a grand opening coming in September. I sent an email into General Manager Michael Matarazzo who had this to say regarding the new venture: --- Opening in September 2008, The Fenix will offer a unique selection of over 15 specialty martinis as well as classic cocktails, fine wines and spirits. An eye-catching menu of delicious food will also be available along with great music and live DJ’s. The Fenix will create an exciting and varied cocktail party atmosphere every Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 4pm. Our guests will enjoy the comfortable lounge for food or a casual after work drink. Later on, they can listen or dance to the best music and DJ’s around or just gather at th...
