We recognize that it has been a difficult few years for our nation’s economy and for Pennsylvanians in need of work. No group understands this better than our libraries whose staff and volunteers have done their level best—even in the face of reduced budgets—to meet the increasing need for services, especially for people searching and applying for work or job training. Results of yesterday's election are in and Democrats have claimed four of the five open Borough Council Seats. With elections being held on Tuesday, several sites are providing information on local candidates. From Representative Kampf's website : COLLEGEVILLE – State Reps. Warren Kampf (R-Montgomery/Chester), Marcy Toepel (R-Montgomery), Mike Vereb (R-Montgomery) and Tom Quigley (R-Montgomery) encourage their constituents to attend a public forum to discuss a proposal to toll Route 422. The event will take place on Tuesday evening, Sept. 13, at Pope John Paul II High School. In June, the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (DVRPC) unveiled a proposal to levy a toll on Route 422. This event provides a public forum for those residents who would be impacted by any proposed tolls to voice their opinions and ask questions.

On Wednesday, October 20th, Rep. Paul Drucker will be co-chairing a public hearing to discuss environmental issues and opportunities related to Marcellus Shale gas drilling in Pennsylvania. The hearing will be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 20 at the Schuylkill Township Building Meeting Room, 111 Valley Park Road. Drucker will co-chair the hearing with committee Chairman Mike Sturla, D-Lancaster. Those testifying will include Jan Jarrett, president and CEO of Citizens for Pennsylvania’s Future; Peter Goodman, spokesperson for Trout Unlimited; and Lynda Farrell, spokesperson for The Save Group. On Saturday, October 24th, the Phoenixville Democratic Committee is hosting a beef and beer fundraiser. The event is being held from 7-11pm at the Phoenixville VFW, 200 Starr Street. The fundraiser will give residents a chance to meet the Democratic candidates up for election this November. Ticket prices are $30 and can be purchased at the door. On Friday April 24th, the Phoenixville Democratic Committee will be holding a Wine and Cheese and Silent Auction Fundraiser at the Green Room on Main Street from 7:00-9:30pm. Wine is being provided by the Chaddsford Winery and the cheese is being provided by the Terrapin Café on Main Street. Tickets are $25. At last night's Borough Council Community Development Committee meeting, the topic of discussion was the Phoenixville Public Library and the proposed expansion that will close off 2nd Ave. at Main Street. The committee voted unanimously to recommend that Council approve the closure. For more information on last night's meeting, see today's Phoenix . Former President Bill Clinton will be giving a speech at the Phoenixville Area High School this afternoon. Depending on where you go for your information, the speech is set to begin at either 12:45 or 1:15. According to blogger Karen Johns, who indicates a 12:45 start time, tickets are not available and seating will be first come, first served . The Phoenix, which indicates a 1:15 start time, does not mention anything about admittance . My advice, for those who wish to attend, would be to go over no later than 12.

Today's Phoenix announced that the borough council subcommittee in charge of hiring a new borough manager has retained the services of Keystone Municipal Services Inc., a 'professional executive recruitment firm' located in Mechanicsburg, PA. Keystone will be responsible for advertising the position and collecting resumes. Once resumes have been collected, Keystone, 'will do a first applicant screening prior to circulating the resumes "of perhaps three to five of the top applicants" to the committee for its consideration.' Keystone is currently assisting Kennett Square with a similar search and has also assisted searches in Jenkintown, Norristown and Easton. The borough will be paying Keystone $10k for their help.
