Minor League Baseball Idea Gaining Momentun

The idea of bringing a minor league baseball team to Phoenixville is gaining support. From The Phoenix:

---
If a couple dozen community leaders gathered at Phoenixville Middle School Thursday morning have their way, Phoenixville could be home to minor league baseball.

A couple dozen leaders, that is, who were quickly joined as of Friday afternoon by a half-dozen others. A citizen’s petition drafted Friday and beginning to circulate promises, its authors believe, to add scores more in a demonstration of wide community support for the proposal.

Borough Council member Mike Handwerk (D-Middle) first suggested that Phoenixville explore collaboration with the Chester County Stadium Project Task Force, a volunteer group formed by West Chester Mayor Richard Yoder and Chester County Economic Development Council President and CEO Gary Smith.

The Task Force’s objective, according to Thomas H. McIntyre, Director of Government & Municipal Services for the CCEDC, “is to explore the possibility of constructing a regional, 4,000-to-5,000-seat, multi-purpose, family-oriented recreational venue that would be the home of an affiliated minor league baseball team.”

The article went on to say that the steel site would be the location for the stadium. Brandywine Financial Services is currently in negotiations to buy the site and area apparently on board with the idea.

For those interested in signing the petition, it will be available for review and signature through area civic groups including PAPA, Kiwanis, Rotary, and the Phoenixville Community Education Foundation, and others.

Edited 5/19/08: The Phoenixville Area School District has added the petition to their website.

How will people get to the games? There are no major roads around Phoenixville. The Phillies obviously have 76 and 95. Allentown has 22. Lancaster has 30. There's nothing right by Phoenixville like other baseball towns have. Sure, take 422 to 724 to Bridge Street. Or 76 to 100 to 113 to Bridge Street. That's crazy and won't work. West Chester, Coatesville, and the other options make a lot more sense. Plus they are more well known towns (at least West Chester is). Unless they call the Phoenixville team "Valley Forge". But hey, at least if a team comes here, then maybe some parking will be added to this town! Maybe being the key word.

A stadium at the steel site combined with the train line to Paoli/Oaks would be the perfect combination...

I love this idea. Im a huge sports fan and I think having at team like this in town would be a great center piece for the community. It gives out of towners all the more reason to go check out the shops on bridge st. GET IT DONE!

We were formed in early 2018 by Dina Rowan and I came on board last June. We have roughly 15 volunteers so far and would like to expand that to expand our reach. We take donated items directly to the people. We provide them with a hot meal and new or lightly used clothing and self-care products. We have long term goals of a mobile shower center, vocational training and assisting with housing in any way possible. What kind of items do you need?
