Sly Fox Goes Smoke Free

For those of you who prefer to eat at restaurants that are entirely smoke free, good news! You no longer need to drive into the city as one of our own has decided to take this step. Sly Fox Brewhouse & Eatery, located at 519 Kimberton Rd in the Pikeland Village Square, has been smoke free since January 1st.

From their e-newsletter:

---
"It was just time to do it," explained Pete Giannopoulos. "Our customers here in Phoenixville-not all of them, but most of them-were beginning to complain about the smoke and a business like ours benefits tremendously when the air is clean and people can taste the great beer and food. Even many of our longtime customers who are smokers understand and have told us they agree with our policy." Both locations will make whatever efforts they can to accommodate smokers outside the buildings, Giannopoulos added.
---

As a non-smoker, this is a welcome change to a place that already has a number of things going for it.

It was great news hearing that The Fox finally went smoke-free. Coincidentally, I quit smoking the week before and it has made my trips there much more tolerable. Not to mention that I don't have to air out my clothes after each visit.

If I recall correctly, both Mollie Maguires and Iron Hill are smoke free as well.....wonder if The Ep will go smoke free?

Next, please put in place accommodations for no belching, no farting, no body odor, no crying or screaming children, and no foul language.

All of these things raise my blood pressure, and are therefore hazardous to my health just like secondhand smoke.

you might want to add whining adults, and therefore yourself, to your list

Yay for the Sly Fox going smoke-free. This was one of the main reasons I never really went there.

The funny thing about the Sly Fox was that the smoking area/bar was downstairs, the non-smoking area in the upstairs "loft". So all the smoke went right up to non-smoking section anyway!

Good news. It's so nice coming out of Molly McGuire's and not having to burn my clothes.

Shame we're losing a smoke-free pioneer in the Vale Rio soon (I know, it was only part-time smoke-free, but they get points for doing it before it got trendy).

The Val Rio Diner will close for good on Feb. 24. The physical diner itself will be disassembled and moved off the property and a Walgreen's Pharmacy will be built on the same location as the diner and the ice cream store next door. There are currently no plans in place to relocate the diner for reopening but the owners are apparently considering it. I doubt seriously.

Val-Rio Diner- I've been gone from the Phoenixville/Pottstown area for 44 years, BUT this diner was "the place". Another Walgreens!! My town in the midwest has had this happen- wonderful, historic or unique places torn down to accomodate this particular drug store chain- they all look alike and have no connection to the community! Watch out Morgantown, PA- same thing is happening (at least so I've been told). Where are the people who look after the style and history of a community? Sorry, Phoenixville for losing one the the famous Pennsylvania diners!

if the Vale Rio was a viable, money-making, sustainable business, it wouldn't be leaving. Same with the Fountain Inn. Bottom line. It's economics. Frankly, I am happy to see it go. Horrible service, subpar food for the price. Overall unfriendly.

Several Local Businesses Closing Up Shop

Over the next couple of months, three local businesses will be closing their doors. On Saturday, February 16th, Polka Dots will be closing their store at 246 Bridge Street. The shop, a women's clothing boutique, opened nearly two and a half years ago but has recently found business slow. --- Originally, (owner Susan) Randels said that the store was doing well, but that the momentum could not keep up. "The things that sold in Paoli didn't sell in Phoenixville," she said, adding that some customers thought that the store was too expensive or the sizing did not go high enough (size 12 being the highest size sold). "We tried everything." Randels also said that parking was an issue for many of her customers who could either not find spaces or did not feel safe parking behind the store. --- Polka Dots remains open until the 16th, with hours on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. The phone number is 610-935-5914. Local Business Spotlight: The Fenix

As mentioned a couple of months back , Phoenixville will soon be home to a premium martini and whiskey bar. Named The Fenix, it is owned by the owners of Molly Maguire's and will be located right next door to Molly's at 193 Bridge Stret. The Fenix hopes to have a soft opening tonight or tomorrow with a grand opening coming in September. I sent an email into General Manager Michael Matarazzo who had this to say regarding the new venture: --- Opening in September 2008, The Fenix will offer a unique selection of over 15 specialty martinis as well as classic cocktails, fine wines and spirits. An eye-catching menu of delicious food will also be available along with great music and live DJ’s. The Fenix will create an exciting and varied cocktail party atmosphere every Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 4pm. Our guests will enjoy the comfortable lounge for food or a casual after work drink. Later on, they can listen or dance to the best music and DJ’s around or just gather at th...
