Tyler James Closed?

My reporter on the street Jen tells me of a rumor that Tyler James has closed its doors as of yesterday. Can anyone confirm?

I wouldn't be surprised. They just couldn't pull it together.

So the beer pong tourney is cancelled!!!? Sad to see another empty store. I tried to go there as much as I could but I just like ryan's better.
Anonymous said…
I loved going to Tyler James. They had a great atmosphere and the food was so much better than PJ Ryan's. I hope the rumor isn't true.
Anonymous said…
I am mainly upset about the beer pong tourney as well. Maybe they will find another venue? I already paid, and can't get a response from the organizer.

Simple face folks, everyone who wants a nice downtown to stroll to shop or eat needs to do just that - stroll, shop, and eat. Its not enough to say "oh I really like that place but its a shame they closed". Support is key from the community. I try and support them every chance I get because I enjoy the energy downtown.
Anonymous said…
Also, its good to note that many places may close due to the economic downfall. Snap out of it people! Now I hear a few more businesses are in trouble. Great, now its back to the 90's when it was a ghost town. No support equals no downtown, and believe me, I was here when the downtown was a ghost town. You don't want to go back to those days. It was horrible and lifeless.
Anonymous said…
the 80s and 90s sucked big-time downtown. Patronize the businesses!
Anonymous said…
Relax....I don't see the downtown now becoming a ghost-town
Anonymous said…
Its not a ghost town but the sad part is that most of the patrons are out of town folks. Where are all the people in town who live around the borough and want to live in a lively downtown. Keep it up and we'll all be hanging out in Collegeville
VC said…
I agree with Bob... I like seeing people succeed, but they just didn't pull it together. That space has so much potential that it would be shame to have it sit idol.

Nothing was said when Speedie's Bistro closed in December... Businesses come and go all over the place.
Anonymous said…
They certainly didn't close because of my lack of support. However the huge space upstairs was always empty - I don't see places that are usually crowded like Molly Maguires and the Fenix having the same trouble. Also from what I hear the restaurants are doing pretty well.
Anonymous said…
that huge space upstairs sure wasn't empty on the nights it was open (fri/sat).

it's a shame, they actually had one of the better beer selections in town and the bar food was decent (although many people didn't even know anything about that).

R.I.P. the Pub...hope my friends that worked there end up okay.
Anonymous said…
So ... do we have confirmation here or just a lot of debate?
Anonymous said…
Confirmed.............closed!
Anonymous said…
OK well then onto the next question - what happens to the bpong tournament?
Anonymous said…
Noooooo! I need my big buck hunter safari! :(

Never ate at TJs, but I did enjoy their beer selection, and that they had something other than golden tee to play with when you were enjoying yourself.
Anonymous said…
Never went there. Never wanted to go there. If you aren't something unique in the restaurant/bar business you will fail.

How about a good craft beer hangout with a great selection of singles and six packs to go? Now that W&S has left town who will fill the vaccuum?
Anonymous said…
To the last poster - sounds good, let's open one...

(What is W&S by the way? - just moved here)

When it was Jesters, they had a hard time. Then the owner was smart into leasing it out. They were doing so well also! I can't bad mouth the owner. I could say so much, but my grandmom always said,"If you can't say anything nice don't say anything at all". So there you go Lenny! I hope you can find someone to do as well as TJ's did! Good Luck on that! The Moon and Fitz were empty as hell on Sat. night and TJ's was packed! Go Figure!

I agree with VC. Especially given the general financial climate in the past (and going forward), no business is immune. I recently moved here and, while i have made an honest effort to support my local businesses, unfortunately, i didn't have the opportunity to visit TJ's. Hopefully the next occupant has better luck!
Anonymous said…
Spiede Bistro closed because the service was poor and the food not so great. I went there 3 times. The first time the pork in my sandwich was undercooked - very pink. I told the young man behind the counter and he didn't seem to be that concerned. Another time I got the bison burger and it tasted like it had been cooked on a grill that hadn't been cleaned in a year. You can't just open and put signs out without good service and good product. There was just no enthusiasm or energy there. Too bad...it was a great idea.
Anonymous said…
As I understood it from a conversation my husband had wth some of the TJ staff, they were planning to close for a week or so to sort of regroup, introduce a new menu and do some rearranging to the restaurant. If that is the case, maybe they plan to reopen. The food at TJ is quite good and we have always had good service. More than I can say about other establishments in Phoenixville, but sadly, the atmosphere is really lacking in Tyler James. I often wonder if that is why no bar/restuarant can survive in that space.
Anonymous said…
ps, the beer pong tournament has been moved to Doc Browns...
Anonymous said…
That is sad, I really liked the food there.
VC said…
I have also heard that they are planning to revamp and reopen. YAY! Best of Luck!

In my original post, I was making no comparison between Tyler James and Speedie's Bistro. Trust me on that! I was only mentioning that we have seen businesses that have come and gone in the downtown area without much commentary. If anything, this is a tribute that many people did support and are sorry to see this happen to Tyler's.
Anonymous said…
What and where is Doc Browns?
Anonymous said…
Ever since Dell's (to this day they still had the best hot roast beef sandwich that I have ever tasted) left that site it seems like nothing can survive. Hopefully TJ's will, because it is very nice inside and they always seem to have a decent crowd. The upstairs could use a little bit more ambiance, as it still looks like a reception hall with very little "mood" to it.
Anonymous said…
Upstairs needs to be a dance room. Cages. Girls. Loud dance music. Dark atmosphere with strobe lights. It'd be very hip. Instead it's typical Phoenixville with people wearing baseball hats and their work boots drinking a Miller Light with their friends from high school who never left town.
Anonymous said…
Yeah....that is just what we need around here. Go to Pumptown for that kind of action
Anonymous said…
Lets face it....its P-ville. Pumptowns the only thing you got

Anonymous "Also from what I hear the restaurants are doing pretty well."

I'm not sure where you're hearing that from, but it certainly isn't anyone who actually works at the restaurants in Phoenixville. It's a nightmare across the board, business down 30%-50% everywhere except PJ's - their bar sales are the only thing keeping them afloat. Expect more closings and soon. I personally know of three eateries looking frantically for a buyer, any buyer, and a fourth thinking about trying to sell.

I hope Tyler James' is able to reopen, but this isn't a good sign for them.
Anonymous said…
"I'm not sure where you're hearing that from, but it certainly isn't anyone who actually works at the restaurants in Phoenixville."

Actually I asked a waitress last week at Marly's and she said they were doing well. Maybe they are the only ones. I understand it is a general trend across the country that restaurants are in trouble.

Secondly, can anyone answer what and where Doc Browns is? It doesn't even show up on google.
Anonymous said…
P'villians - let us try to prevent this from happening again. As others have said, if you can afford to - patronize these businesses. Everyone these days is telling you how to pinch every penny, but the fact is if everyone does this we will be in serious trouble. I have been trying to go out to eat more during the downturn, I hope others can do the same!
Anonymous said…
Tyler james rocked. I hope they come back. However it looks like cloud 9 is under construction. I hope when they open they continue their famly atmosphere, pabst on tap, and the globe lights on the wall that say "bar" on them.
Anonymous said…
cloud nine is supposed to be a pizza joint...one of the partners i heard is tyler james.

To the anonymous poster who thinks all eateries in Pville are doing bad and even provided some made up numbers 40 - 50% down in sales. Sorry son, but you made up those numbers. Ask Guy at Black Lab how his sales are doing (if he gets a minute or 2 to talk to you). Also Molly MacGuires is also doing very well, and are trying to buy other buildings in Pville for more restaurants (not Irish) and they purchased a building in Landsdale and are opening a MM's in that town (wow! they must be doing really poorly). Marly's is also doing very very well (try and get a table on a weekend), Iron Hill is steady and slightly up from last year (ask any of the 3 owners).

I hate to point you out as a fraud, but "you're a fraud". Provide some real facts instead of making stuff up based on what you hear from a disgruntled employee or two. Do your homework son!

If you had the choice to go to Tyler James or PJ Ryans.....you'd have to be blind to go to Tyler james
Anonymous said…
Phoenixville is not a southstreet, old city, or a high end red light district, where every one who has 100 dollars is able to go out every night to blow it!( not spend). The downward spiral of resturants and bars that continually to fail, cater to a supreme amount of people who hardly visits downtown, but never to the true locals.
Anonymous said…
Name the downward spiraling restaurants genius. Oh you mean Molly MacGuires who is looking for more property to open another restaurant in Pville and not to mention the property they just purchased in Landsdale? Or do you mean Black Lab Bistro who is opening an Italian Restaurant in town along with their bistro? Or maybe you mean Majolica that is also looking for larger spaces and was rated one of the top 50 restaurants in Philadelphia? Or it has to be Iron Hill that has several locations including Media, Montgomeryville, Delaware and West Chester (Pville is one of their busier locations). Or how about PJ Ryans that has a place in West Chester and Philadelphia and is ahead of early projections from his business plan. Oh yeah, you must mean one of those downward spiraling restaurants in town? Son, do your homework. Most of the people coming into town to buy dinners are from out of town. But there is also a few folks in town that can easily afford to eat in town. They may even be your neighbor. Do you care to elaborate some more on your baseless facts or do you want to step up to the plate and provide some actual numbers to support your claims?............................Yeah, I thought so! McDonalds is in the Giant shopping complex......... enjoy!!!!!!!!!!
JW said…
let's try and keep this at least a little civil
Anonymous said…
Why aren't you deleting the comments from the person talking down to others by using the term 'son'?
JW said…
I have deleted several. The ones that remain have enough of a valid argument to be left alone.

I will ask that whomever is the owner of those anonymous postings please stick to the argument without resorting to school yard insults.
Anonymous said…
The point is that even with the "son" remarks, these factual comments are more useful and honest then someone who is engaging in conjecture and is more hurtful in design then a mere "son" remark. Notice that there are no other statements from this person with any factual support. Why is that? If he/she thinks there is a downward spiral with the restaurants, then by all means please provide the facts. Using Tyler James closing is only hurting his/her argument further because TJ's was one of the lowest priced rest/bars in town. So how does that support their argument? I agree more eateries and businesses will fold, but not as a result of too high prices, or Pville not being able to support them, but rather due to the largest downturn in the economy since the depression era. Another point is that any "strong" business depends not only on local support, but also support from the near surrounding communities and the national and international community (in some cases).

Everyone points out the businesses that are going out, but never mention the new businesses in the same argument. PJ's and others may close but we also gained new businesses such as Lush Boutique, The Hand Crafted Cookie Factory, The Terrapine Cafe, and the now being built bike store and bead store. Not to mention all the businesses that have not gone out of business such as all the restaurants above and a number of smaller businesses such as Best Friends, Browns Cow, Charmed Spirit, the 2 coffee shops, Hipster, Jaworski's, Ellies, USA Kilts, The Colonial, etc, etc, etc.

There are more arguments for the positives of downtown Phoenixville growing, then there are for the negatives of the downtown. If you have facts to present to the argument, then by all means please present them to the thread. If you're just gonna make inaccurate comments that are meant to deteriorate the positive aspects of the businesses downtown then at least try and present them in an intelligent manner.

My family and I ate at Tyler James after the Christmas parade and we concluded they seemed to be a perfect candidate for 'Kitchen Nightmares!' The atmosphere was blah and the food was mediocre at best. We're not into the "bar scene" so I can't comment on that aspect...but just on the restaurant itself.
Anonymous said…
The bar scene was never that good. It was very much like the Moon Saloon minus the smoking. PJ's and Molly's are the places to go if you're into the bar scene. Much better crowd and more than 5 people are in there.
Anonymous said…
Molly's lost my patronage when they ditched Tetley's English Ale. It took me 3 meals to really seal the deal and for me to realize how mediocre the food really is there.

For being an "Irish Pub", their idea of an Irish breakfast is downright sad. It's not like the Irish are really well known for their cuisine, but hell, it's hard to screw up breakfast.

I do like PJ's though. Their food is decent (wings are good), but I wish they had a better beer selection. Even TJ's had "upscale" beer such as Chimay should it strike your fancy.
Anonymous said…
Wow! PJ's over anyones food is pretty bad. I disagree about Molly's food, but that's why we're all different. One thing I do agree with the previous poster is the loss of Tetley's English Ale (I got that all the time) but may I suggest the Hoegarden which is light and citrusy and I'm really enjoying the switch. I also like that Molly's is a Guiness certified bar which is really important since they clean their pipes weekly and ship their beer in properly refrigerated trucks (not just cold but proper temperature) because cold air can also be destructive to beers taste if shipped too cold and then stored at slightly warmer temps. Anyway, that's just my 2 cents. If you like even fruitier beers then try a Dirty Hoe, which is Hoegarden with some cranberry concentrate mixed (its not too bad, but I'm not a sweet beer person). Also if you like fruitier brews then Iron Hill has some great micro's that will fit that bill.

I know some of you guys miss PJ's, as do I, but lets make an effort to patronize our locals to keep the flavor and enjoy all the variety we have in town.

So I heard through the grapevine that the owners of the building locked TJs out, possibly over a disagreement stemming from a huge rent hike. Based on what I heard, it did not sound like they'd be coming back any time soon..
Anonymous said…
I also hear the Creperie is also closing. And do not speak ill of Pumptown, I met my wife there.
Anonymous said…
For the 1 or 2 angry commenters insisting that the P'ville restaurant scene is just fine - pardon my lack of posting for a few days. I wasn't at my computer.

What sort of "proof" do you need? Does the fact that I'm employed with one of the established eateries mentioned count? The fact that I know the owners of the other restaurants, that I speak with them daily? That I know exactly how many plates leave our kitchen each week, and have a good idea as to what's leaving the other restaurants' kitchens?

Business. Is. Down. It's down badly. The locals ARE NOT coming out to eat like they were over the summer. The out of towners are still coming, but not anywhere near the pace they were six months ago. It's a known fact to anyone who sees the covers every day.

This has nothing to do with high menu prices - it's everyone from Irish Joe's to 100 Bridge. I don't know how menu prices even came up. The economy is in the toilet. Customers who used to come in weekly now come monthly, and tell us they just can't afford to eat out as much as they used to.

You could, and most likely have, walked by my restaurant on a Friday night and see a busy dining room. What you don't see is the Wednesday night with all of 10 tables for the entirety of dinner service, or the Tuesday afternoon with 4 tables for lunch.

Molly's is looking to buy more property? Goodness, three different Phoenixville restaurant owners seem to think that they're looking to sell.
Ciao is on the back burner. That would be the Italian joint G & C of the Black Lab wanted to open. Now they're not sure it's the right time, considering the slowdown at the Lab.
That Italian Place is in rough shape. Creperie is in even worse shape.

What more do you want to know? Try talking to the servers who've had their hours cut because of the lack of business. Try talking to the restaurant employees who've been let go. Try dining at the various restaurants on non-weekends and see if they're as busy as they were 6 months ago.

As to Iron Hill, PJ's, etc - no answers for ya there. That's a bar thing, and bars are in a different place in this economy. People drink to drown their sorrows. PJ's is the only place I know to be doing *well* right now; they seem to be steady every night of the week. Great place to spend some time if you don't mind the fights.

Pumptown is always crowded
Anonymous said…
To Mr Restaurant: Ohhhh, glad to see you finally made it back to respond to your inaccurate thread. You are using broad strokes to spread fear about the restaurants. Guy, who I also know, has been fudging with the new restaurant since he thought about opening Ciao. Aside from the now slow economy he has been slow to pull the trigger because of the building owner. Do you know who that is????? Think draperies.

So you know people who worked at some of the eateries (Like Molly's). I spoke to the owners. Who do you believe more????? Of course they reduced staff. The economy has definitely put a damper on the speed of growth. But make no mistake, that the businesses you are talking about is growing. Every one of them. I never said that 3 different restaurants are looking to sell, I said that they're looking to expand. And yes, Guy is still thinking of opening Ciao and he has been fudging in his head since he came up with the business plan (nothing new). And yes, Molly's IS growing in Phoenixville and Landsdale (tell your friend to go apply at the new one when their done construction). Any answer on Majolica yet (I noticed you omitted them). And of course you don't know the owners of Iron Hill, why would you. Just go ask them (please). Or how about Ryan's???? Did you talk to them yet? Please do!!!!!!!!!!

All business is down, that's obvious. I didn't say that the economy hasn't effected Pville (it surely has). But you painted a picture that Pville is done! It is far from done. I know that for a fact. Trust me!!!!!!!!!!!! So tell us your restaurant name, so you can get some publicity. Its easy to come on here and toss grenades without any facts. You have no facts (except for a few disgruntled current/ex workers).

Do some homework please!!!!!!
Anonymous said…
I hear Majolica is closing. Can anyone confirm?
Anonymous said…
Not Closing!!!!!
Anonymous said…
I am a local and I go out to eat plenty.
Anonymous said…
Don't be so sure about Majolica not closing. They just let go of the chef they hired a few weeks ago, citing the fact that they are closing. It's a shame too because the owners are nice and weren't in the business just to make money but to share their good food.
Anonymous said…
Sorry Anonymous, I listen to the word of owners as opposed to ex-employees. Simple solution is to go to Andrew and ask him for yourself before you spread the word of ex-employees. Please, you're all invited to ask any business owner about rumors before adding to them, but why do that when you can just drop an bomb in a thread and watch the damage. Lazy, lazy, lazy!!!!!!!!!!!!
Anonymous said…
I agree, I am tired of people listening to the unfounded rumors and speculation. There are a handful of people that live in town that don't like the direction of the town growth. It's evident on any blog about Phoenixville. Some people even say it outwardly by stating it in their comments. If people want to report the news then by all means do the footwork involved with responsible journalism. If not, I hear TMZ is a great place to work.

When was the last time you talked to the owner of Majolica, anonymous? Because a lot could have changed since then. I too hear that it's closing. So I guess we'll just have to wait and see, won't we, son? It wouldn't surprise me on bit since they are only open about 4 days a week.

Majolica's final night of operation is this Saturday
(2/28). We called and the hostess confirmed this. It is tragic. We loved the place, but have not been there much recently due to our finances.

Pumptown isn't closing and they have an expanded menu
Anonymous said…
Angry Anonymous poster (BC, is that you??): I didn't mention Majolica because they've been mulling shutting down for months. You can't just wake up one day and decide to close a business; if you're doing it right you need time to plan, sort out contracts, take care of all the legal stuff, and so on.
The official word is out now, Majolica is indeed closing:
http://www.philly.com/philly/blogs/the-insider/Majolica_closing_Saturday.html
So there's my answer, since you asked for it. Since you know all the restaurant owners so well, sir, how did YOU not know this was coming?

Yes, I know the owners of the various locations you've mentioned save for Iron Hill. I haven't mentioned Iron Hill's status in any of my posts, have I?
Here's the thing. I'm not certain if you're a customer, a resident, or perhaps involved with downtown P'ville in some fashion, but you obviously don't own or work at any downtown eateries. I have a feeling I know what capacity you're speaking in here, considering the "son" comments, and if I'm right you have a vested interest in P'ville being portrayed as vibrant, growing, and immensely successful. The business owners DO NOT gleefully proclaim how much business is down to anyone on the "outside." Bad news isn't good for business, so when a customer asks they're told that things have slowed some due to the economy, but that the restaurant is doing fine.
If it's a non-customer asking, let's say someone like a person involved with the "community" of downtown P'ville, they're told things have slowed some due to the economy, but that the restaurant is doing fine because, and I quote from the last time this happened at my restaurant, "it's none of their (expletive) business."

I'm not painting the picture that Phoenixville is done. I'm stating facts - that established Phoenixville businesses are hurting across the board, and that Tyler James IS NOT and WILL NOT be the only place ceasing operation. Downtown Phoenixville WILL change, there WILL be more empty storefronts, and the town WILL lose tax revenue due to the loss of various businesses. Will places like PJ's survive? Quite possibly. Will CORNERSTONES of the Bridge Street culture such as Majolica survive? No, not all of them will.

You were wrong about Majolica, sir; what other businesses you're pumping are you wrong about as well?
Anonymous said…
With all these Anonymous people,,,,, I will only believe the people who leave thier names. If there's so much truth in what you say, why stay Anonymous? To me that says it all! Any restaurant has it troubles! Especially now! I have been in the restaurant buisness since I was 14, I'm now
32. Gee and I have been working in Phoenixville ever since the start till last Feb. The gossip never changes along with the same people gabbing up the same drama! But yet I still come home about twice or three times a month to it! GOT TO LOVE PHOENIXVILLE!!! Barb V

Looks like I was right about Majolica and my source is more legit than yours. You owe me.
Anonymous said…
I owe you? OK....I will take you to lunch at Tyler James then
Anonymous said…
I admit I was wrong and surprised at Majolica closing, congratulations Anonymous (you can hold a super bowl party for it). BUT you're wrong about your implication about Pville being "in real trouble". Thats the dumbest thing I've ever heard. You know why? Because we are in a serious recession, so every business, in any town, is hurting (not just Pville). Am I right? Yes, all towns are hurting, but your implication is that Pville is hurting more then other towns ("real trouble"). Isn't that what you said? Yes it is what you said, so let me explain:

Black Lab (fine), Creperie (fine according to recent quotes of owner on rumors), USA Kilts (fine), Salon Fiber (fine), Wolfgang Books (fine), Hipster (fine), Creep Records (fine), PJ Ryans (fine), Artisans Cafe (fine), Fashionista Salon (fine), Karate Studio (fine), Ellies (fine), Steel City (fine), Foundry Building (fine), Molly's (fine), Irish Joes (fine), Fenix (fine), Jaworski's (fine), Iron Hill (fine), 101 (fine), Marly's (fine), Moon Saloon (fine), Best Friends (fine), Philly Fades (fine - new location on Bridge), Charmed Spirit (fine), Cigar Store (fine), and not to mention the new businesses such as The Hand Made Cookie Factory (new), Bike Shop (new), Bead Store (new), Lush (new), Tile Store (new), and the Pickering Creek Inn (new). Do I need to go on?????????????????

So when you speak your words about Pville being "in serious trouble", please at least put your words into context. Yes some businesses will close (you're must be a real smart person??? Wow!). Businesses come and go all the time Mr Trump. If Pville is in trouble then please explain alllllllllllll of the businesses above that may be struggling (like all other businesses in any town) but are hanging in there (with no thanks to you).

So 2 points for you and about 20 points for Pville. Now, explain all that is soooooo bad compared to any other town??????????? Please help me to understand.

Pete

Great job Barb V., please tell the doom and gloomer that Pville has been through worse then this mild depression. I assume that Mr Doom & Gloom (on the other end of the computer) hasn't been in Pville too long. Its OK, you have some learning to do. When the steel mill closed, that was when this town was put through the mill (so to speak). Oh, I'm sorry if everyone has to sell their summer homes because times are soooo tough. And I'm sorry if your child may have to pay for some of their college education now (booohhooooo!!!!!), and I'm sorry if you have to reduce your car fleet in your household from 3 cars down to 2 or (god forbid) even 1 car. We all shed a tear for you Mr Doom & Gloom. Buckle up your straps and quite your whining!!!!!!!!
Anonymous said…
Nice! I love it when one of the "gloomy" people on these blogs gets spanked - lol!

Its a shame that people feel the need to be so negative about a great town. I somewhat agree with the person above that asks to "explain it?". I don't get it either????? Oh well!

I'm still waiting for the list of things that make Phoenixville's downtown be "in serious trouble"?????? And don't mention the economy, that's obvious and EVERY town is going through that situation. Waiting.................waiting.................

I spoke with Andrea from the Pub... The beer pong tournament is cancelled... it will be rescheduled to a later date and time. It was not moved to Doc Browns. DOC BROWN IS THE NAME OF THE BAND THAT WAS GOING TO PLAY THAT NIGHT.

If anyone wants more info check back to phillybeerpong.com They will be doing another event with Andrea from Tyler James in the summertime. And tyler james is NOT reopening.

Finally info regarding the beer pong tournament! Much appreciated. I had paid for the tournament and after trying for over a week to contact the organizers and eventually raising a paypal dispute I finally got my money back.
