In our opinion, this is actually is compelling news for the Phoenix and the existing and new readership.

It's been out belief for several years that a weekly tabloid on the order of the City Paper, Metro or Philadelphia Weekly is exactly the kind of publication that the bedroom communities surrounding Phoenixville will consume best. With this move they're targeting an underserved market and the potential is great.

A weekly tabloid can be hipper and more user friendly while the Phoenix's website can evolve to include daily updates and discussion threads and, if executed correctly, more economically satisfy the daily news requirements of Borough.

It's become obvious that there has not consistently been enough quality news or features to support a daily in this market, and now the paper can be rid of the canned national filler and focus content areas on sports, entertainment, culture, the townships and the Borough.

We are hopeful that the effort will include that enhanced focus as well as improved editorial content and design- for the new paper and the online presence- or the potential that this change signifies will be an economic reaction rather than a positive modification.

We're excited about this approach as an advertising opportunity and a way for the region to be represented with more style and aplomb!

Well, at least its circulation will almost double.

I think this is great. How will we get the paper? Will it be delivered to all homes in Phoenixville or will we need to go pick it up somewhere?

It's a shame really but probably better than continuing to watch The Phoenix become even worse than it already has. The paper's relevance to this community has been so diluted by delivering such a poor product, most likely because of a way too small budget, it must stop existing in it's current form. I think we can all understand not being able to cut the buget sufficiently to be able to at least cover the costs. Very sad. The end of an era.

I tried to pick up this "free" paper today from one of the corner boxes and it was locked. I thought it was free now?

Anonymous above has left the perfect example of the the "dumbing of America". An alarming amount of people don't read and when they do, they don't comprehend what they just read. Just think about "anonymous" out on the sidewalk tugging at The Phoenix paper box, thinking it was free because he or she simply did not read or comprehend the first part of the article. "Starting June 20th . . . And then, instead of reading the article again to get the facts, he or she decides to make a post to verify that they can't read.

Several Local Businesses Closing Up Shop

Over the next couple of months, three local businesses will be closing their doors. On Saturday, February 16th, Polka Dots will be closing their store at 246 Bridge Street. The shop, a women's clothing boutique, opened nearly two and a half years ago but has recently found business slow. --- Originally, (owner Susan) Randels said that the store was doing well, but that the momentum could not keep up. "The things that sold in Paoli didn't sell in Phoenixville," she said, adding that some customers thought that the store was too expensive or the sizing did not go high enough (size 12 being the highest size sold). "We tried everything." Randels also said that parking was an issue for many of her customers who could either not find spaces or did not feel safe parking behind the store. --- Polka Dots remains open until the 16th, with hours on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. The phone number is 610-935-5914. Barry Cassidy Addresses Downtown Rumors

Today's Phoenix ran an article written by Barry Cassidy in which he addressed the various rumors that have been circulating regarding the immediate futures of several local businesses. He paints a much rosier picture than some of the comments here would have you believe. From the article: --- On Monday someone came in and told me Molly Maguire's was closing. I knew that was not correct because they are expanding, not closing. Then about 20 minutes after than I heard from someone else that 101 was closing and the building was going to become a McDonalds. I knew that was not correct either. Marietu' Fanny from the crepe joint at Bridge and Gay called me and was upset that she heard someone at the business association meeting say she was closing... She went on to tell me that they were doing well... Then I heard probably the most outrageous rumor of all... Ellie's Choice is closing. Now think about this one, folks. Here, Ellie has been here for a long time, she was here ...
