Outdoor Air Monitoring Device Installed At Kindergarten Center

The Phoenixville Area School District posted a new letter to parents on their site with an update on the steps being taken to test the air quality around our schools. The letter indicates that the Pennsylvania Department of Environment Protection installed an air monitoring device outside of the Kindergarten Center last Friday. Updates will be provided as results come in.

I'm glad it's at the Kindergarten Center, but what about the other schools in Phoenixville? None of them had great air quality and I would think that Barkley, being in the 3rd percentile, warrented a monitor also.

This is only a guess but, from the information provided by USA Today, the biggest contributor to the air pollution in town is from Temtco Steel, which is very close to the Kindergarten Center. As such, given limited resources, it makes the most sense to do the test there. Should the results show that the pollution levels are within an acceptable range, it would stand to reason that the same could be said for the other schools in the district.

Another piece of good news is that Temtco Steel is no longer operating in this location. They moved 2 years ago. That's a promising sign for the outdoor air quality at the PAKC (and surrounding schools).

Ah, but Cromby is still with us and is probably burning coal at this time of year/price. It will be interesting to see what the air monitors show.

for better or for worse, this has worked everyone into such a frenzy that if the test results come out saying the air is fine most people will not believe it.

I totally agree with the first poster, Barkley is only in the third percentile, are we saying that's acceptable?

I agree with Anonymous @ 3:14 PM - even if this device says the air quality is good, you will have a group of people who are convinced it is bad and/or WANT it to be bad because they need something to be angry about. They want to see lawsuits filed, businesses shut down, etc. and anything less than that will be considered some kind of conspiracy.

I hope people realize that the USA Today piece did not actually measure air quality - they never even set foot near any of the schools. They were just projections, estimates, guesses.

As someone else pointed out, Temtco Steel, which probably figured into their projection, isn't even there any more. They probably would say the air quality downtown is bad because of Phoenix Steel...

The air quality is what it is downtown, but the soil is still contaminated from Phoenix Steel!
