Mosquito spraying Thursday in Phoenixville

From the Pottstown Mercury:
The Chester County Health Department will apply a mosquito control treatment on the borough on Thursday evening, August 12, between 8:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m.

The areas to be treated will be bordered by Washington Avenue to the north, Nutt Road and Valley Forge Road to the west and south, Second Avenue to the east.

In the event of a weather delay, the application will be conducted on Friday, August 13, 2010.

On August 9, 2010 mosquito samples collected in this area by the Chester County Health Department West Nile Virus program staff tested positive for West Nile Virus.

The treatment will be administered with truck mounted equipment to spray the target area of the borough.

The equipment dispenses Permanone RTU, a permethrin insecticide product, at a rate of 1.5 ounces per acre.

It is recommended that residents stay indoors and close windows during treatment and for approximately one hour after spraying is complete.

I don't like the idea of the pesticides, but I like the idea of contracting West Nile even less. I wonder if there are plans to spray more of the Borough since the area identified in the article is pretty small. The rest of the Borough has mosquitoes too and they have been happily feasting on me and my husband.

I don't like the idea of pesticides, either, so I did some more research on the product they are spraying. It is actually a bacteria that eats the larvae of mosquitoes. The Commonwealth has a webpage that reports the testing and results in all of the counties.

The good news: it was a mosquito sample that tested positive, as opposed to a dead bird or a veterinary report.

There is also research that indicates that most humans have already experienced a low-grade infection of West Nile Virus, and already have immunity to the disease. The symptoms are similar to the flu--aches, pains, low-grade fever. However, there are groups that do have a greater risk--children/infants, the elderly, adults with compromised immune systems.

With yesterday's rain, did the spraying occur?
