Antigua Guatemala brings Guatemalan Cuisine to Phoenixville

On June 26th, Phoenixville became home to Antigua Guatemala, "The only restaurant serving authentic Guatemalan cuisine in the Phoenixville area." The restaurant, located at 119 South Main Street (formerly Destiny Brewing Company), owned by Angel Salguero, has gotten positive reviews on various local blogs:

"After trying Antigua Guatemala, I can honestly say that I'm very pleased to have a restaurant like this in the neighborhood. Although the selections are somewhat similar to what you might find at a Mexican restaurant, there are some distinct differences..."

he was right...lots a food....cheap...good food and excellent service...it was all there.

This is a gem of a restaurant, and a welcome change to the crowded, over-priced Bridge St restaurants. Good food, great prices, and friendly service. Head 2 blocks up Main St--the old Moose lodge. You can see their menu on Facebook, or at: http://www.angelsantigua.com/

We decided to give this restaurant a try since we live in the neighborhood, and we like to try all the aear eateries. It turned out to be a very unfortunate experience. We were sat immediately, but for some reason it took our server a while to apprear. When we questioned our server about the number of items on the menu, we were unable to get answers as our server did not know the menu either.

Once we got the process started, our server got our food to our table promptly. Unfortunately, the food was very bland. The only thing that kept us going with our meal was salsa sauce which we used it to add the flavor to our meal.

In addition to that, our server disappeared on us for a long period of time even though there were only 3 tables. In the end as we were leaving, we tried to make contact with the lady who we assumed to be the manater/owner?. But we were ignored.

The overall experience is not one that we would recommend to anyone nor do we have any intension of repeating. We were very disappointed compared to other restaurants in town and what they offer.

Very good food & service. It's casual and spacious. Reasonably priced with large portions.
NOTE: Guatemalan cuisine is in between Mexican and Venezuelan (i.e Sazon in Philly).

Try any of the following:
BEV ~ Horchata (Sweetened milk with cinnamon)
BEV ~ Fruit Smoothie (Banana)
APPT ~ Pupusas (both Cheese & Pork) w. Latin Sauerkraut.
ENTREE ~ Any of the Special Caldos (Seasoned Beef Stew)
DESSERT for (1) ~ Atol De Elote (Sweet corn soup w. Cinnamon)
DESSERT for (sharing) ~ Sweet Plantains w. sour cream

Over the next couple of months, three local businesses will be closing their doors. On Saturday, February 16th, Polka Dots will be closing their store at 246 Bridge Street. Barry Cassidy Addresses Downtown Rumors

Today's Phoenix ran an article written by Barry Cassidy in which he addressed the various rumors that have been circulating regarding the immediate futures of several local businesses. He paints a much rosier picture than some of the comments here would have you believe. From the article: --- On Monday someone came in and told me Molly Maguire's was closing.
