Updates on several downtown buildings

In Dennis Wrigt's article on 2/23/07, he wrote about a discussion he had with Barry Cassidy. Among other things they discussed what was going on with some of the store fronts in town. Some we already knew about but others were new, at least to me. Some highlights from the article

In no particular order, the former Seachrist's will become Molly Maguire's; the Hotel Washington will transform into Ryan's Pub; the former Scioli's Used Furniture and Antiques is slated to be Earthmart; and the former Sleepy Hollow is going to be a French bistro.
A major restaurant is scheduled to move into the former Dan's Sports Pub; the former Phoenix Tavern will become a high-end fabric store; and Troxell's Jewelry will be occupied by Romantic Jewelers from West Chester.
"Romantic Jewelers will be going to the Zoning Hearing Board to make the building into three apartments on top," said Cassidy.
Tom Carnevale, of Carnevale Eustis Architects, Inc., may be moving his office next door to Jaworski's Music Center; the Superintendent's Building will begin its refurbishing next month; and several people are vying for Jerry Davis' old building.
"We have a lot of high-end people looking for properties in this town," Cassidy said "It's hard to buy buildings on this street. Just because people see a vacancy doesn't mean it is available."
...
"What we are looking at are more restaurants to feed everyone that comes to town," [Cassidy] said. "We don't need to have too many takeout places. We don't want to look like the boardwalk."
...
When I asked him about what business would he bring to Phoenixville if he had the opportunity, Cassidy didn't hesitate and said, "Trader Joe's."

----------
Nice to finally hear some updates on what is being planned for downtown. Still have a lot of concerns about parking (or lack there of) but that will sort itself out eventually I'd imagine. For now I will look at the positive and wish the new business owners much success.

Trader Joe's would be a great addition to the downtown.

I would def think that a Trader Joes or a Wholefoods would be a fantastic addition to this town. Not that Kimberton Wholefoods is a bad place to go, but I think if it was more accessible and can offer competitive prices like Trader Joe's can, than it may be worth it.

The earth would love it too.

Several Local Businesses Closing Up Shop

Over the next couple of months, three local businesses will be closing their doors. On Saturday, February 16th, Polka Dots will be closing their store at 246 Bridge Street. The shop, a women's clothing boutique, opened nearly two and a half years ago but has recently found business slow. --- Originally, (owner Susan) Randels said that the store was doing well, but that the momentum could not keep up. "The things that sold in Paoli didn't sell in Phoenixville," she said, adding that some customers thought that the store was too expensive or the sizing did not go high enough (size 12 being the highest size sold). "We tried everything." Randels also said that parking was an issue for many of her customers who could either not find spaces or did not feel safe parking behind the store. --- Polka Dots remains open until the 16th, with hours on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. The phone number is 610-935-5914. Barry Cassidy Addresses Downtown Rumors

Today's Phoenix ran an article written by Barry Cassidy in which he addressed the various rumors that have been circulating regarding the immediate futures of several local businesses. He paints a much rosier picture than some of the comments here would have you believe. From the article: --- On Monday someone came in and told me Molly Maguire's was closing. I knew that was not correct because they are expanding, not closing. Then about 20 minutes after than I heard from someone else that 101 was closing and the building was going to become a McDonalds. I knew that was not correct either. Marietu' Fanny from the crepe joint at Bridge and Gay called me and was upset that she heard someone at the business association meeting say she was closing... She went on to tell me that they were doing well... Then I heard probably the most outrageous rumor of all... Ellie's Choice is closing. Now think about this one, folks. Here, Ellie has been here for a long time, she was here ...
